Everything you need to know about the 2024 swimming carnival

The permission and entry link has just been sent via Compass. That also includes time, date and location details for the upcoming school swimming carnival, as well as the deadline for signing up.

Here are some more important and useful pieces of information:

The carnival is for Years 2-6 and will be held at Manly Andrew Boy Charlton Aquatic Centre on MONDAY February 5, 2023.

Buses will leave school at 8.15am sharp. Please arrive at school no later than 8am for a timely departure as buses can’t wait for students. The buses will return at around 1.00pm. Students will be brought back to school by bus.

Here’s everything else you need to know about the day.

WHY IS THE CARNIVAL HELD SO EARLY IN THE SCHOOL TERM? :
The carnival date is based around the next rounds of competition across the Diocese. We want our students to have the opportunity to take part in Zone, District, State and so on, should they qualify. The next round of competition is held just a few weeks after our Carnival. That and swim centre availability is what determines the date for our own carnival.

The pool time and allocation is strictly managed by Andrew Boy Charlton pool, based on our school size and their booking policy.

UNIFORM:
Students must wear their sports uniform including shoes and socks and their colour house t-shirt. They are to wear swimmers under their uniform. This must be a one piece swimming costume for girls and no boardshorts for boys.

WHAT TO BRING:
Goggles
Swim cap
Towel
Sun screen
Water bottle
Healthy lunch

HOW DO THEY GET THERE AND BACK?
All students will travel to the venue by bus. The bus will leave St Joseph’s at 8.15am sharp and return to school by approx 1.00pm. You may choose to take your child home from the swim centre at the completion of the carnival. You can also pick your child up as usual at the end of the day.

CAN I COLLECT MY CHILD MYSELF?
You may choose to take your child home from the swim centre at the completion of the carnival. If you would prefer to do this, the carnival will conclude at roughly midday and you will need to ensure your child’s teacher knows they have been collected, prior to taking them home.

CAN I DROP MY CHILD OFF MYSELF?
No. Students will travel together by bus. Please be at school at 8am sharp for departure at 8.15am.

WHICH RACE IS MY CHILD IN?
The children will compete in the age group they are turning in 2024. For example if they turn 8 in 2024, they will compete in the 8yrs race.

If you enter your child in the 25m race, they are then not eligible for the 50m freestyle race. This is because this race is non-qualifying, and is for children who are less confident to have a go. There will be parents assistants in the water during the 25m race.

PLEASE NOTE – THERE WILL BE NO RACE ENTRY CHANGES ALLOWED ON THE DAY OF THE CARNIVAL.
We strongly recommend and encourage students to enter any event they might want to have a go in, as they can always drop out on the day, but it’s trickier to add them in.

NORTHERN BEACHES CARNIVAL:
The Northern Beaches Carnival is made up of several schools around the area. Students who record a time that makes them eligible for the Northern Beaches Carnival will proceed further. Please note: children cannot proceed to the Northern Beaches Carnival in an event unless they swim in the 50m race for that event. They must be in the 8 years event to compete in that carnival (those in 7’s will not be eligible.)

WHAT IF MY CHILD WANTS TO SIGN UP OR CHANGE RACES ON THE CARNIVAL DAY ITSELF?
Administration and organisation requirements means there will be no race entry changes allowed on the day of the carnival. We strongly recommend and encourage students to enter any event they might want to have a go in, as they can always drop out on the day, but can’t be added in.

CAN I HELP OUT?
We would love volunteers for various roles including timekeeping, handing out ribbons and more. If you can assist, please email Niki Frost, our PE specialist teacher.

CAN I COME AND WATCH?
You are welcome to come and watch your child compete. Photos will also be taken on the day of the event.
